background and aims: the spice zingiber officinale or ginger possesses antioxidant and neuroprotective effects. in this study we hypothesized that treatment with hydroethanolic extract of ginger (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg, p.o) would have an effect on the scopolamine-induced memory impairment in rats.methods: in this experimental study, 64 male wistar rats were divided into eight groups (8 rats in each group): normal saline, scopolamine (1 mg/kg), ginger extract (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg), or scopolamine (1 mg/kg) plus ginger extract (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg). memory impairment was induced with a single injection of scopolamine (1 mg/kg, i.p). cognitive functions were evaluated using passive avoidance learning (pal) task. retention test was carried out 24 hours after training, and the latency of entering the dark compartment [step-through latency (stl)] and the total time in the dark compartment (tdc) were recorded. all statistical analysis was carried out at 5% level of significance using spss version 21. the data were analyzed by anova followed by tukey’s test.results: the time latency in scopolamine-treated group was lower than control (p

The effect of intracerebroventricular administration of insulin on memory impairment-induced by scopolamine in male rats

Introduction: Cholinergic neuronal deficiency is one of the main causes of Alzheimer's pathology, which leads to learning and memory impairment. Scopolamine is a muscarinic cholinergic antagonist commonly used to induce Alzheimer's disease (AD). Insulin also regulates learning and memory function. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of central administration of insulin on pa...

The Prophylactic Effect of Hydroalcoholic Extract of Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) on Ethanol-Induced Reproductive Toxicity in Male Rats

BACKGROUND Ginger is a natural dietary component with antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties. This study was conducted to evaluate the prophylactic effect of ginger extract on ethanol-induced reproductive toxicity in male rats by measuring the total homocysteine (tHcy), trace elements, antioxidant enzymes activity including glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase, ...

The Protective Effect of Hydroalcoholic Extract of Zingiber officinale Roscoe (Ginger) on Ethanol-Induced Reproductive Toxicity in Male Rats

This study was conducted to evaluate the prophylactic effect of ginger extract on ethanol-induced reproductive toxicity in male rats. Twenty-eight adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 4 groups and treated daily for 28 days as follows: control, control-ginger (1 g/kg of body weight [BW]/day by gavage), ethanol group (ethanol 4 g/kg of BW/day by gavage), and ginger-ethanol gr...

PROTECTIVE EFFECTS OF GINGER (Zingiber officinale) EXTRACT AGAINST LEAD INDUCED OXIDATIVE STRESS ON LIVER ANTIOXIDANT ENZYMES IN MALE ALBINO RATS

In the present study, ethanolic extract of ginger on lead acetate induced toxicity was studied in male wistar albino rats. Seven groups of rats were used in the study. Glutathione peroxidase, Glutathione reductase, Glutathione-S-transferase, Catalase and Superoxide dismutase were decreased in lead acetate treated (200mg/kg body weight, once daily for eight weeks) group. However treatment with e...
